Fabrics Processing : Singeing & Mercerizing

Singeing & Mercerizing

Singeing & Mercerizing:

Fabric Singeing:  Singeing is a mechanical process by which hairy, loose fibers are removed from the surface of the textile material by heating or burning to make the material smother and lustrous. Singeing is an essential process for the fabrics which will be subjected to mercerizing and dyeing to obtain best result from this process.

There are different types of singeing machine, among them gas singeing is widely used in the textile industry. In our gas singeing machine, the fabric passes over brushes to raise the fibers, and then passes through the flame burners. A flame comes into direct contact to the fabric and burns the protruding fibers. Here flame height and fabric speed is the main concern to minimize the fabric damage & maintain required fabric quality. When singeing is done to the cotton fabric, this results in increased wet ability, better dyeing characteristics, improve reflection, no frosty appearance, a smoother surface, improved visibility of the fabric structure, less pilling and decrease contamination through removal of fluff and lint.

Capacity of DORNIER SINGEING range is 12000-15000 kg/day.

Fabric Mercerizing: Mercerizing is one of the important parts of wet processing technology. It’s a special type of treatment where the physical properties of the material changes and get some extraordinary effect & feeling to the materials. This process can be applied to the fabric before or after dyeing.

We know that cotton fiber cell structure is different from one to another. Some cell structure is triangular, some are oval, some are hexagonal and some are zigzag and many more. When light falls on that cell, it reflects the light as per its cell structure. Sometimes this reflection is regular, sometime it is not. It affects the luster of the fabric surface. For getting a regular reflection from the fiber it pass through a process called mercerizing process.  In the mercerizing process, the cotton fabrics are passing through the concentrated solution of strong base (Sodium hydroxide 300Be & 18oC temperature) to produce great swelling with resultant changed in the fiber structure, dimension, morphology and mechanical properties. By mercerizing process the strength of the fabric increases up to 30 ~ 40%. Cotton fibers shape becomes round when it shrink in the solution of caustic soda. The surface of the fabric becomes fine and light reflects on it constantly, so the luster of the fabric increase, the swelling power of the fiber also increase.

We have world famous machine DORNIER for both singeing and mercerizing range. Origins of these machines are Germany. Both processes are carried out in tubular form. Capacity of mercerizing range is 4000 kg/day.
